Gallery for Contemporary Art | Exhibitions & Photo Art

The Gallery for Contemporary Art Schwerin, also known as Dezernat5, is a place for contemporary art in the heart of the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Those looking for a gallery for contemporary art, new artists, or an exciting venue for exhibitions will find here not an interchangeable standard space, but a producer gallery with a clear signature, local anchoring, and an open view of current artistic positions. The building at Franz-Mehring-Straße 11 combines exhibition, conversation, and artistic production. On its own website, Dezernat5 describes itself as a gallery that presents artist personalities with distinctive positions in the current art scene; the works range from painting and drawing to object, sound, and video. The city of Schwerin adds that since 2010, a group of artists has established itself here with joint exhibition concepts. This mix of continuity, experimentation, and closeness to the artists makes the place so interesting for visitors, collectors, and art enthusiasts. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/))

Even for people who have consciously searched for a gallery for exhibitions, Dezernat5 is relevant because the place not only shows finished hangings but also makes a vibrant scene around contemporary art visible. The program is regularly accompanied by events, artist talks, and formats in the gallery lounge. This creates not a rigid museum character but an atmosphere in which art directly engages with its audience. This is particularly exciting for visitors interested in contemporary art in Schwerin who want to experience not just a single work but a whole environment of ideas, conversations, and perspectives. In this sense, the gallery is both an exhibition space and a meeting point for artistic developments that resonate beyond the moment. Current Art and Exhibitions in Schwerin

The heart of the gallery is the changing exhibition program. Dezernat5 presents artist personalities whose language is described as unmistakable, and the selection shows that here not just a single medium is in the foreground, but the wide field of contemporary art. Painting, drawing, object, sound, and video form the core of the program. For search queries like contemporary art Schwerin or exhibitions Schwerin, this is precisely relevant: The place does not work with a narrowly defined theme but with an open attitude towards contemporary art and artistic research. So, those looking for a gallery for contemporary art will find here a space where different formats can coexist and reinforce each other. From the city's perspective, the gallery is also an integral part of the Schwerin art landscape because it has established itself as a producer gallery and regularly offers exhibition-related events. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/))

Particularly interesting is the connection between exhibition and encounter. According to the city of Schwerin, not only events take place in the gallery lounge, but also stimulating artist talks. This is an important point for visitors who do not just want to look at pictures but wish to understand the idea behind an exhibition. Especially in contemporary art, dialogue is often as important as the object itself. Therefore, Dezernat5 relies on a format where the presentation of the works and personal engagement merge. This makes the gallery exciting for people interested in artist talks, networking, and new positions. Contemporary art is not only shown here but embedded in a social and cultural context that makes the visit more intense in the best sense. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/kultur-tourismus/kunsterwachen/Skulptur-Geste_0001_0001/))

Additionally, Dezernat5 has repeatedly worked with guest artists over the years. The city of Schwerin emphasizes that joint exhibition concepts often arise in cooperation with international guest artists. This makes the gallery connectable beyond the local scene and keeps its content dynamic. For visitors, this means a high content diversity and a program that cannot be reduced to a fixed style. So, those looking for a gallery for new artists will find here a place where different voices, techniques, and ways of thinking coexist. This openness makes the house particularly attractive for collectors, art enthusiasts, and anyone who is excited about contemporary visual language. Dezernat5 as a Producer Gallery: History, Artist Collective, and Profile

Dezernat5 is more than just an exhibition space. The gallery describes itself as a producer gallery, and the operators claim to be both gallery owners and artists in personal union. This is an essential part of the profile because here, no pure rental logic dominates, but artistic responsibility and production coincide directly. The group around Udo Dettmann, Thomas Sander, and Tino Bittner has shaped the place for years. The city page explicitly states that the artist group has been presenting itself in joint exhibition concepts since 2010. Thus, Dezernat5 is not a short-lived pop-up but a grown address for contemporary art in Schwerin. The gallery can therefore also be interesting for visitors who consciously search for producer gallery Schwerin or gallery for new artists and appreciate an environment where the art is supported by the people behind it. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/neues-ding/?utm_source=openai))

The history of the building gives the place additional depth. Until 1990, the passport and registration office of Schwerin was located at Franz-Mehring-Straße 11. The art project MELDESTELLE addresses this circumstance and understands the former government building as a starting point for artistic trace preservation. In two phases, traces and data are collected, reflected upon, and transformed into an exhibition. This makes the house itself part of the cultural memory of the city. For a gallery for contemporary art, this is a special added value: The space tells not only of the present but also of a resilient past. Those interested in art places with history will therefore experience not only changing works here but also a building whose former function is reinterpreted in an artistic context. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/meldestelle/))

This connection between present and memory runs through many projects of Dezernat5. On the website, series such as SOLO, collaborations with other artists, and site-specific works appear, which establish a clear connection to Schwerin and beyond. For classification as a gallery for contemporary art, this is important because contemporary art is not only understood as a stylistic question but as an attitude: open, experimental, dialogue-oriented, and often at the boundary between image, object, sound, and intervention. The gallery thus shows that a regionally anchored place can still work internationally and thematically openly. This is the strength of the house, and that is why it fits so well with search queries related to contemporary art, exhibitions, and new artistic positions. Opening Hours, Address, and Directions to Franz-Mehring-Straße 11

For a successful visit, practical information is crucial. The Gallery for Contemporary Art Schwerin is located at Franz-Mehring-Straße 11 in 19053 Schwerin. According to the current website, the gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 4 PM to 7 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 2 PM to 6 PM. For individual exhibitions or special appointments, there may be additional notes, such as visits by request or special opening hours. Therefore, anyone planning their tour through Schwerin should pay attention to the current announcement in advance. Especially for a gallery that works strongly with changing exhibitions, it is sensible to look at the daily and monthly planning. For the search query opening hours gallery Schwerin, this information is central because it allows for both spontaneous visits and planned arrivals. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/))

The contact options are also clearly stated. In the imprint, Dezernat5 lists a phone number and the email address galerie@dezernat5.de. This is particularly helpful if you want to visit an exhibition, ask a question about an appointment, or learn more about the current program. The gallery also works with a clear external presence, which is visible on the website and through other project pages. For visitors, this means: The address is easy to find, and contact is directly possible. So, anyone searching for directions gallery Schwerin has not only the address but also a concrete communication option. This is a real advantage in an art scene that often consists of short project windows. Especially for local specifics such as openings, finissages, or events by request, it is worthwhile not only to arrive blindly but to check briefly whether the chosen time fits the current program. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/impressum/))

Parking Around the Gallery and What Visitors Should Currently Consider

When it comes to parking in Schwerin, one thing is especially important for visiting Dezernat5: the traffic situation on Franz-Mehring-Straße. The city of Schwerin announced in February 2025 that Franz-Mehring-Straße between Zum Bahnhof and Severinstraße will be fundamentally renovated from March 3, 2025, to April 30, 2026, and this section will be completely closed. For residents, Severinstraße is accessible via Zum Bahnhof, and the traffic routing in the area has been adjusted. Therefore, anyone wanting to visit the gallery should currently plan more time for the journey and especially not assume that the usual route is usable without restrictions. For visitors, this means: better to leave a little earlier, plan the journey and return flexibly, and pay attention to the current traffic reports. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/news/sanierung-franz-mehring-strasse/?utm_source=openai))

Another point of reference is the barrier-free city guide of the city of Schwerin. There are two parking spaces noted for Franz-Mehring-Str. 11. This is at least a practical hint for visitors who specifically seek immediate proximity. However, since the document comes from a city guide and the urban redevelopment is currently ongoing, this information should be understood as a guideline and read in conjunction with the ongoing construction situation. This is why preparation is so important: The gallery itself is located in an urban environment that is well connected to public infrastructure, but the renovation can visibly change the routing. Therefore, those coming from outside should check the current local notices from the city and not rely solely on older maps or memories. For a relaxed visit, a little planning is currently the best way. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/export/sites/default/.galleries/Dokumente/Leben-in-Schwerin/Menschen-mit-Behinderung/Stadtfuerer_Final-Schrift-12-1.-Wohnen-und-Leben.pdf))

Especially for a destination like Dezernat5, this diligence is worthwhile because the visit often does not consist of a short detour but is often associated with time for the exhibition, conversation, and possibly an event. If an opening, artist talk, or lounge event is taking place simultaneously, the stay can be longer than expected. Then it is pleasant to already know in advance how to arrive and how to assess the surroundings. The gallery itself is not a remote address but part of an urban cultural space, whose accessibility is temporarily altered by the current construction work. For search queries like directions gallery Schwerin or parking Schwerin, therefore, the most important answer is not just a single parking space but the recommendation to actively consider the current traffic situation. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/news/sanierung-franz-mehring-strasse/?utm_source=openai))

Photo Art, Sound, Video, and New Artistic Positions

Even though the gallery primarily mentions painting, drawing, object, sound, and video in its standard descriptions, it is thematically much broader than a single keyword might suggest. This is why it also appears in searches for gallery for photo art or gallery for new artists. The official program description makes it clear that Dezernat5 shows artist personalities with distinctive positions and is not limited to a single medium. At the same time, the gallery repeatedly points out formats in collaborations and calls for submissions where photography, installation, video, and performance play a role. For visitors, this is important because contemporary art today often intertwines multiple media. So, those looking for a gallery where image, space, sound, and documentary or photographic processes can come together will find a suitable place here. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/))

The openness to new artistic positions is also evident in that Dezernat5 repeatedly works with guest artists and collaborations. The city of Schwerin explicitly emphasizes that the house often exhibits together with international guest artists. The website also features series that present artists not only in solo exhibition formats but also in projects that emphasize collaboration and exchange. For search queries like gallery for exhibition sought or gallery for new artists, this is a strong signal: It is not just about showing finished works but about the dialogue on how contemporary art can emerge and become visible. Especially in photo and media art, this openness is valuable because the works often navigate between documentation, staging, and concept. The program of Dezernat5 gives space to such transitions. ([schwerin.de](https://www.schwerin.de/kultur-tourismus/kunsterwachen/Skulptur-Geste_0001_0001/))

A good example of this is the international orientation of individual collaborations, such as when the gallery works with partners from other cities or networks. The website mentions the Bergische Kunstgenossenschaft with its partner cities, and this collaboration stands for the exchange between regional anchoring and international openness. Even if not every exhibition explicitly carries photo art in the title, the gallery is structurally designed so that photography can be considered part of contemporary image culture. This makes the house interesting for an audience looking for fresh positions and not bound by rigid genre boundaries. Those interested in contemporary art, media art, or experimental formats will find here a place where such themes naturally come together. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/welcome-art/?utm_source=openai))

Images, Impressions, Awards, and Contact with the Gallery

If you want to see images of the Gallery for Contemporary Art Schwerin before a visit, you will find a dedicated impressions section on the official page with numerous pictures. This page is helpful because it not only shows individual works but also conveys an impression of space, mood, and hanging. Additionally, the city of Schwerin refers to the facade of Dezernat5 in the context of KunstErwachen. The installation SICHTUNG has shown how strongly the place can act as a visual sign in the urban space. This makes the gallery interesting for social media or discovery searches: You get not only information but also a sense of what the place looks like and how it affects visitors. So, if you are wondering whether a detour is worthwhile, you can get a good sense of the visit with the images. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/impressionen/))

Additionally, awards and institutional recognition are mentioned. On the gallery page, it is noted that Dezernat5 is a member of the Association of Art Museums, Galleries, and Art Associations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. Furthermore, the Art and Culture Prize 2016 from the Foundation of the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the state capital Schwerin, as well as the Innovation Prize for Art Mediation 2024, are mentioned. Such notes are not for self-promotion but a sign that the gallery is taken seriously in the cultural life of the region. For visitors, this is a good argument to take a closer look at the place when they are looking for a gallery for contemporary art in Schwerin that goes beyond mere decoration. If you want to get in touch, you will also find the email address and phone number on the website. This allows for not only digital preparation for the visit but also direct coordination with the team. ([dezernat5.de](https://dezernat5.de/impressionen/))

In the end, the impression remains of a place that consciously functions differently than a classic exhibition operation. Dezernat5 combines producer gallery, artist collective, events, and urban space into a profile that is attractive for both art enthusiasts and seekers with specific questions. Whether you are looking for opening hours, directions, parking, images, photo art, or new artists: The gallery provides a credible framework for that. That is why it fits so well with search intentions around contemporary art Schwerin. Those planning a visit should check the current opening hours and traffic situation but remain open to a house that showcases contemporary art with its own signature and takes the dialogue with its audience seriously. Unless you happen to read a poster on the sidewalk like we did, indicating that there is a great gallery in this building, you, as a non-Schwerin resident, will unfortunately not recognize it. Department 5 is worth recommending! Good exhibition, super nice contact with the artist himself and many cultural events. My wish: More recognition of the art gallery on the outside of the house, preferably with a calendar of events and also a bit more of an inviting entrance to the house.
