Restaurant Café Prag Schwerin | Menu & Breakfast

The Restaurant Café Prag is one of the most well-known culinary addresses in Schwerin, combining the atmosphere of a traditional coffee house with its location in the heart of the old town. At Schloßstraße 17, at the corner of Puschkinstraße, you are just a few steps away from the most important sights and experience a place where history and the present visibly belong together. The website describes the establishment as one of the most traditional places in Schwerin, a meeting point for coffee, cake, and the daily changing lunch menu. The city of Schwerin also emphasizes that the café is located in a magnificent town house and offers a stylish, classically influenced ambiance. This combination is what makes it appealing: those looking for a breakfast with character, a good cup of coffee, cakes from their own patisserie, or a relaxed break between the castle, theater, and city stroll will find a place with a distinctive identity here. The terrace offers a view of Schwerin Castle and other landmarks of the city, while inside, high ceilings, historic flair, and a clear coffee house culture set the tone. Thus, the Restaurant Café Prag is not only a gastronomic destination but also a piece of Schwerin's city history that can be tasted, seen, and experienced. Menu, Breakfast, and Cakes & Tarts

Those looking for the Restaurant Café Prag because of its menu will find a combination of classic breakfast, small dishes, warm cuisine, desserts, and a large cake buffet. The breakfast section, which is offered until 11 a.m., is particularly strong and includes several variations. The menu features, among others, the Bohème breakfast with café au lait and croissant, the 'Continental' breakfast, the 'Schwerin' breakfast, and the 'Café Prag' breakfast with muesli, eggs, cold cuts and cheese platter, and orange juice. For those who prefer something simpler, there are scrambled or fried eggs, scrambled eggs with house-cured gravlax, or the option to create a personal breakfast. Here, the character of the establishment is already evident: not fashionably overloaded, but lovingly, carefully, and with a clear commitment to classic café culture. The selection of coffee specialties from espresso to cappuccino and café au lait to Irish coffee, Rüdesheimer coffee, or Maria Theresia fits this well. Café Prag does not see breakfast as a side issue but as an integral part of the daily program, which makes its location in a touristically and culturally heavily frequented city center even more sensible. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/speisekarte))

Beyond the breakfast section, the menu is versatile enough to cover various occasions for visits. Among the small dishes available from 11 a.m. are Mecklenburg fish cream soup, puff pastry pockets with veal ragout and mushrooms, toast 'Café Prag' with fried turkey breast and green asparagus, as well as the popular Strammer Max. Fresh market vegetables with hollandaise sauce and parsley potatoes, as well as other hearty dishes that change according to the season and daily specials, are also available. The website also showcases daily dishes such as pumpkin cream soup, beetroot cream soup with beef back and pear, fresh German asparagus with parsley potatoes, and Norwegian salmon from the grill. For warm dishes, the chefs rely on classics such as half Barbary duck with apple red cabbage and Thuringian potato dumplings or game roast from local hunting with red cabbage, juniper sauce, and lingonberries. This is not only touristically appropriate but also regionally connected and offers guests a clear choice between lighter lunch dishes and hearty main courses. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/speisekarte))

Particularly important for the brand of the house is the cake and tart section, as this is where the classic coffee house feeling is most tangible. The website emphasizes that the buffet changes constantly and always comes fresh from the in-house patisserie. Mentioned are cream cakes, fruit tarts, dessert pastries, sheet cakes, and tea pastries. Ice cream sundaes like chocolate-nut sundaes or Swedish ice cream sundaes, as well as individual ice cream flavors, make Café Prag attractive even for the late afternoon. On the homepage, the establishment itself highlights the daily freshness of the cakes and tarts, the consistently warm kitchen, dishes for big and small appetites, as well as ice cream sundaes and desserts as the core of the offering. In practice, this means: The Restaurant Café Prag is not just a breakfast address and not a simple coffee house, but a place where various moments of enjoyment can be combined throughout the day. From the first espresso in the morning to a light lunch dish to a piece of cake in the afternoon, the line remains clear, classic, and hospitable. This versatility also explains why the establishment has been perceived as a fixed entity in Schwerin's everyday life for years while remaining attractive to visitors who are planning only a short stop or an extended coffee house afternoon. History and Tradition of the House

The history of the Restaurant Café Prag goes far beyond the current name and is one of the strongest arguments for a visit. According to its own history page, everything began in the time of the Mecklenburg Duke Christian Ludwig, in the mid-18th century. In 1755, Johann Gottlob Hering, who had been appointed court confectioner, committed himself to serve the court faithfully. After his death in 1772, his widow initially continued the house, before Carl Friedrich Leopold Krefft acquired the coffee house in 1791 and restored its original purpose. This marks the beginning of a family tradition that would span five generations. In 1801, Carl was appointed court confectioner by Friedrich Franz, the later Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I., and officially obligated; in 1838, his eldest son Johann Friedrich Krefft took over the coffee house and continued the title as well. Later, Carl Friedrich Leopold Krefft also received the title of court confectioner in 1855. These early decades show that the house was not just any café but remained closely connected to court culture and the history of Schwerin. This explains why the restaurant is still more than just a gastronomic operation today: it is a bearer of local memory. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/geschichte))

The next generation continued this line. In 1877, Friedrich Krefft, known as Fritz, took over the management, and later his widow Betty Krefft successfully continued the house and had the current building constructed by the Clewe construction company in 1908/09. This new building continues to shape the character of the house to this day. The initial furnishings were simple with wooden chairs and wooden tables, but under Carl Friedrich Leopold Krefft, who took over the coffee house in 1919, it received a new, more representative design. Comfortable club chairs and wall paintings gave the café a noble character that matched the city with its residence history. In 1936, the building along with the business premises was finally sold to the Mecklenburg government. A part of the history is particularly exciting because it directly reflects the changes of the 20th century: in 1948, the place was temporarily called Café Inntourist, in 1952 it was listed in the telephone directory as HO business location 'Einheit' and from 1954 to 1958 as Café 'Einheit'. In 1959/60, an artist from Schwerin painted the façade with the Charles Bridge and Hradčany, thus visually preparing the later name. Since then, the house has borne the name Restaurant Café Prag, which quickly became familiar to the people of Schwerin and stood for a cozy local pub with Czech beer. This is a remarkable change of identity: from a court confectionery to a public, urban meeting place, without losing its historical aura. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/geschichte))

In the 1980s, the house returned to its roots with a new claim. After three years of planning and implementing construction measures, it reopened in 1985 as a traditional coffee house. In 1991, there was another renovation, during which an old wall painting was uncovered, which is now visible along with photos of the Krefft family on one of the back walls. The history page explicitly emphasizes that the traditional coffee house continues to live on in the Restaurant Café Prag, but the offering has transformed into a combination of café and restaurant. This very accurately describes the current appearance: the house is historical enough to convince with authenticity and modern enough to appeal to different guest groups with breakfast, warm cuisine, cake buffet, and changing daily dishes. So, if you are looking for a place with real history in Schwerin, you will find in Café Prag not an artificial staging but a house that has been used, remodeled, reinterpreted over centuries and yet has never been separated from its fundamental idea. The continuity is what makes it particularly appealing, as such long lines have become rare in gastronomy. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/geschichte))

Castle View, Terrace, and Location in the Schwerin Old Town

The location of the Restaurant Café Prag is the actual trigger for many guests' visits. The house stands at Schloßstraße 17, at the corner of Puschkinstraße, in an area of the Schwerin old town that connects the castle, theater, city center, and classic sights. The homepage describes the restaurant as a place where visitors stroll from the castle into the city and explicitly mentions the terrace as a viewpoint overlooking the fairy-tale Schwerin Castle, the Old Garden, the State Chancellery, and other magnificent buildings. The city of Schwerin puts it even more compactly: Café Prag is centrally located in the city center, and from the outdoor terrace, guests enjoy a view of the Schwerin fairy-tale castle and the State Chancellery. This combination of urban space and panorama is rare, as it connects a historic town house with one of the most prominent sightlines of the state capital. Especially for visitors experiencing Schwerin for the first time, this is particularly attractive because you do not have to choose between city strolling and views. You can have both at once: coffee house atmosphere and a view of the landmarks. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/))

The surroundings also make the house additionally interesting. The website mentions nearby points such as the castle 350 meters away, the theater 250 meters away, the State Museum 350 meters away, the center 200 meters away, and the Schlossparkcenter 290 meters away. The neighborhood page also emphasizes the significance of the Schwerin residence ensemble and recommends enjoying the view from the terrace during the summer Schlossfestspiele. There, one can experience the stage and the castle ambiance while enjoying a glass of wine or cake and coffee. The Mecklenburg State Theater is just a stone's throw away, which is why Café Prag fits perfectly before and after an opera, concert, or theater visit. The official city page also describes the place as a traditional coffee house in a magnificent town house with stylish interior, high ceilings, and large windows that remind of the elegance of classic Viennese coffee houses. So, those who want to understand the atmosphere of the house should not only look at the menu but also at the urban landscape in which it is embedded. Schwerin thrives on historical sightlines, water, castle, old town, and cultural sites, and Café Prag sits exactly at a point where these elements come together particularly closely. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/))

Even inside, this location is reflected. On the website and in tourist descriptions, there is talk of one of the most magnificent historical town houses, of classic coffee house flair, and of an interior that recalls Vienna and Bohemia. High ceilings, columns, wall paintings, historical photos, and a lovingly designed interior shape the perception of the space. This is particularly important for search queries like 'restaurant café prag photos' or 'restaurant café prag castle view' because the visual impression is closely linked to the location here. The terrace thus becomes the hinge between inside and outside: historical elegance inside, castle view and city panorama outside. For SEO and for real visitors, this dual effect is strong because it does not reduce the place to culinary aspects but makes it readable as a space of experience. Those who want to structure their day trip in Schwerin sensibly can have breakfast here, take a break after visiting the museum, stop by before the theater evening, or simply enjoy a coffee with a view. The Restaurant Café Prag thus becomes a natural hub between culture, strolling, and enjoyment. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/))

Opening Hours, Reservation, and Service

For good planning, the opening hours of the Restaurant Café Prag are just as important as the menu and location. The homepage states that the house is open from Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For Friday and Saturday, the menu and history page partially state 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. These slightly different details are visible on the website, which is why it makes sense to check the visit briefly in advance or to reserve directly if you want to be on the safe side. Especially on holidays, the restaurant explicitly points out that you should please reserve a table in advance. For search queries around 'restaurant café prag opening hours' or 'restaurant café prag reservation', this is the most practical information: the house is a reliable address throughout the day, but at popular times, a prior reservation helps, especially if you come with several people or wish for a window seat on the terrace. Phone and email are clearly indicated on the website, making contact easy. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/))

The service profile also communicates a clear self-understanding. Under 'Why the Restaurant Café Prag?', the website lists strengths such as friendliness, speed, only professional staff, in-house patisserie, and moderate prices. Among the kitchen highlights are daily fresh cakes and tarts, consistently warm cuisine, breakfast, dishes for big and small appetites, as well as ice cream sundaes and desserts. This is important for guests because it describes the expectations of the house very well: those expecting an exclusively over-staged concept are not right here; however, those who value reliability, a good selection, and a professional, hospitable process will get exactly that. That the operation works with professional staff strengthens the impression of a house that focuses on consistency rather than on sensationalism. The moderate pricing also helps families, day visitors, and older guests to use the café as an everyday address. The Restaurant Café Prag is thus not only a beautiful place but also a practical place with a broad audience. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/))

The website itself also provides hints on how guests experience the house. In the reviews, a very nice café with a special ambiance, attentive and fast service, a good selection of cakes and tarts, friendly staff, as well as a noteworthy café with high ceilings, great columns, and inviting furnishings are mentioned. These quotes are relevant for the search intent around 'restaurant café prag reviews' because they complement the official self-image with a concrete guest perception. Taken together, this creates the image of a house that understands service as part of the overall experience. The service is not just functional but part of the atmosphere; the selection of cakes and tarts is not just a side dish but the central stage of the house. This mix is valuable for a traditional café in Schwerin because it retains regular guests and convinces new visitors. Whether planning a quiet breakfast, a quick coffee in between, or a stylish cake afternoon, you will find here a place that offers clear processes, classic hospitality, and a distinct profile. Parking, Directions, and Practical Tips

When visiting the Restaurant Café Prag, getting there is uncomplicated if you consider the location in the Schwerin city center. The house itself primarily highlights the address Schloßstraße 17 and is so centrally located that many guests cover the last meters on foot from the castle, theater, museum, or city center. Those arriving by car will find the most important information on the official pages of the city of Schwerin. The city map informs that there are around 2000 parking spaces in parking garages and larger parking lots within just 650 meters of the marketplace. Mentioned are, among others, the Schlosspark-Center with 1100 spaces, the Schweriner Höfe with 360 spaces, the Burgseegalerie parking garage with 135 spaces, and the Schlossgarten/Jägerweg parking lot with 93 spaces. Additionally, the city mentions the Altstadt/Grüne Straße parking lot and refers to parking options in the city center and P+R spaces. For visiting Café Prag, this means: you do not have to park directly in front of the door but can use the central parking system of the city center and walk the last stretch through the old town. ([cms.schwerin.de](https://cms.schwerin.de/kultur-tourismus/Information/stadtplan-schwerin/?utm_source=openai))

This is even an advantage for a place like Café Prag because the walk through the old town becomes part of the experience. Those parking in the Schlosspark-Center, Schweriner Höfen, or in the Schlossgarten/Jägerweg area reach the café quickly and have the opportunity to consciously perceive the historic surroundings. Schloßstraße itself is one of the representative streets of the city and is not just a traffic area but also a promenade. Combined with a visit to Café Prag, the way can ideally be connected with a stroll through the old town or a theater visit. In practice, this means: if you are traveling with children, an older companion, or have a tightly scheduled appointment, you should choose the parking garage in advance. If you are planning your Schwerin visit leisurely, it is often even more pleasant to walk a few minutes and take in the proximity to the castle, the facades, and the square spaces along the way. This is precisely where the strength of the location lies: it is central but not hectic, and it allows for a flexible combination of dining, culture, and sightseeing. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/nachbarschaft))

It is also practical that the Restaurant Café Prag clearly communicates its contact options. Phone, fax, and email are provided on the website and in the imprint, which is helpful for reservations and inquiries. The website also points out that reservations should be made in advance, which is particularly sensible on holidays, busy days, or during events. So, if you are planning to enjoy the castle view on the terrace, a specific table in the interior, or a visit before the theater evening, you should see the reservation as a normal part of the preparation. Overall, the practical accessibility is very good if you know the city center logic of Schwerin: park in one of the city parking garages, take a short walk through the old town, then coffee house, terrace, and castle view. For the search terms 'restaurant café prag directions' and 'restaurant café prag parking', this is the reliable statement: it is not the individual parking space in front of the house that is decisive, but the dense city center offering with its walkable accessibility. This keeps the visit relaxed, planable, and pleasantly urban at the same time. ([restaurant-cafe-prag.de](https://www.restaurant-cafe-prag.de/))

Usually I don't expect much from a restaurant in the tourist area, but the food here is quite amazing. I ordered the roast game and it was balanced flavored. The salad sauce is the best one I have ever tasted. The cake I had was not too sweet.

Stylish Spot with Great Cakes & Gin Café Prag is a beautiful place to unwind — elegant interiors, a perfect location, and a really relaxing vibe. Tried the Gin & Tonic (excellent!) and the Orangina lemonade (less impressive). But the real highlight? Their cake selection — absolutely worth it. The staff were polite and welcoming, which made the experience even better. A classy little gem in Schwerin!

The place was great. It was Sunday and that time it was perfect because there are 2 guys basking in front so you have the live music plus a relaxing day. But the old lady who attended us was a bit rude. We sat and ordered but we changed our table just beside the first one we sat down. When she got back with our order and saw us on another table, she was so upset and kicked the chair and murmuring. I understand that each table has its own number which corresponds to your bill after but hello I think her reaction was exaggerated. And there were not a lot of people that time. Anyway aside from the old lady, it was still a good day.

The selection of cakes were amazing and absolutely delicious! The staff were friendly as we tried to speak our best Deutsch! We were in Schwerin visiting the Castle and delighted to find Café Prag on a winter's rainy day :)

The atmosphere of the real Prague. Very tasty food and the service of the staff is beyond praise. 4 stars for the food only because the meat was a bit dry and the sauce over-salted. But still worth a try!
