WHITE FLEET Schwerin | Pier Castle & Pedalo Rental
The WHITE FLEET Schwerin is the first address when it comes to experiencing Schwerin's legendary lake landscape from the water. The starting point could hardly be more iconic: right at the castle pier, opposite the fairy-tale Schwerin Castle. From here, your relaxed journey over Lake Schwerin, Heidensee, and Ziegelseen begins. With daily lake trips from March to October and winter trips from November to December, you can experience the city of seven lakes in the changing seasons – comfortably, weather-protected, and with service on board. Whether you buy tickets spontaneously at the ticket office at the pier or use the online shop, whether you choose the 4-lake line, the large island line with island stop, or a charming winter round: each tour offers new perspectives on the residence ensemble, shore landscapes, and waterfowl. Thanks to its central location, access and parking are easily organized, and even for small adventures in between, pedal boats are available at the castle pier in good weather. Thus, an outing becomes a lasting memory.
Pier Castle Schwerin: Departures, Stops, and Orientation
The most important hub of the WHITE FLEET Schwerin is the Castle Pier in the castle bay. It is located at Werderstraße 140 – directly opposite the castle and just a few steps from the Old Garden. Here, the scheduled trips over the Schwerin waters begin. The signage will guide you from the city center and castle park along short paths to the jetty; at the pier itself, you will receive information, timetables, and tickets. The location is not only photogenic but also practical: those arriving by train can reach the pier after a short walk through the old town; those coming by car will find parking options in close proximity at the city harbor. From here, the classic round trips run in a loop that shows the residence ensemble from a unique perspective: you pass the castle facades, turn towards Stangengraben and Heidensee, cross over to the Ziegelseen, and finally return to the castle. Depending on the line, there are also designated pick-up and drop-off points, such as in Zippendorf on the eastern shore of Lake Schwerin, at the Speicher Hotel on Ziegelsee, or at the nature island Kaninchenwerder. With the commissioning of the new harbor facility on Kaninchenwerder in June 2024, the island stop will be particularly comfortable, allowing nature lovers to easily reach the protected island with a bathing area, grill, and fire pit. Please note that pick-ups and drop-offs – especially outside the main season – may depend on the weather. At the Castle Pier, access is level and wide; depending on the ship used, boarding is designed to be comfortable, making it easier for guests with strollers to come on board. On-site, the crew informs you about which departures are offered on the respective day; during the high season, several round trips daily are common, while in the cooler season, trips focus on fixed days and times.
Pedalo Rental at the Castle Pier: Season, Times, and Tips
The search queries around pedal boats clearly indicate: many guests want to experience the Schwerin lake landscape not only on board a passenger ship but also want to pedal themselves. For this purpose, there is a seasonal pedal boat offer at the castle pier, opposite the castle. In good weather – typically in the warm season and preferably during the day – pedal boats are provided directly at the pier on selected days. For exploratory trips on the protected castle bay, the stable boats are particularly well-suited: you enjoy the dome view of the castle, glide along the shorelines, and pause whenever you like. The pedal boat operation is weather-dependent; fixed times do not apply year-round, but experience suggests a rough timeframe from late morning to afternoon hours. Therefore, plan your spontaneous tour flexibly and check the current daily notices directly at the castle pier. Practical tips: come early in sunny weather to avoid waiting times; wear a light jacket in case of rising breezes; and protect your smartphone in a waterproof bag if you take photos from a low perspective. Families appreciate pedal boats as a quiet, safe activity with a castle view, while couples prefer the romantic atmosphere of the golden hour. If you want to combine your water experience, first board the 4-lake line and then round off the outing on the pedal boat. Please note that prices, availability, and minimum age are posted on-site and may vary depending on the season. For SUP or kayak fans, there are complementary offers in the area, but the classic pedal boat at the castle remains the iconic option to discover Schwerin's water stage on your own.
Timetable and Lines: 4-Lake Line, Large Island Line, and Winter Line
The WHITE FLEET Schwerin structures its program clearly and visitor-friendly. From March to December, lake trips are planned; the highlight is between April and October when the 4-lake line operates daily. This round trip lasts about 1.5 hours and leads from the castle pier over the characteristic waters – Lake Schwerin, Heidensee, Ziegelaußen and Ziegelinnensee – back to the castle. Along the route, you will experience urban silhouettes and quiet nature sections in alternation: waterfowl on the wide water surfaces, reed edges along the islands, and the brick facades of the Werder suburb. From May to September, the large island line complements the offer – also with around 1.5 hours of travel time and island-typical views. It can include stops such as Zippendorf and the island Kaninchenwerder, allowing excursionists to conveniently pendulate between city and nature. In the cooler season, the large winter line creates a special experience: from November to December, two-hour trips are offered from Wednesday to Sunday; on clear days, the view opens over the castle into golden late autumn light, while on windier days, the panoramic windows of the lower deck provide cozy protection. Additionally, there are experience-oriented special trips such as the evening twilight tour in the summer months, fleet parades at the start of the season, and thematic culinary trips in late autumn. The specific frequency and service of individual intermediate piers may change depending on the season, weather, and demand; therefore, it is worthwhile to take a look at the current timetables or make a quick call to the pier in advance. Important to know: departures are weather-dependent and suspended in fog and ice. If you want to board or disembark along the way, for example in Zippendorf, you should register this in advance, especially in the low season, as intermediate stops depend on the weather and line. This way, your lake round can be planned without losing the charm of spontaneous discoveries.
Tickets and Booking: Online Shop and Ticket Office at the Pier
To ensure a smooth boarding process, the WHITE FLEET Schwerin offers two uncomplicated ways to get tickets: the online shop and the ticket office directly at the castle pier. Digitally purchased tickets conveniently arrive via email on your smartphone; on-site, simply show the QR code. Those who prefer to decide spontaneously or pay in cash can use the ticket office at the Castle Pier. Especially during holiday periods and sunny weekends, it is advisable to book early, as popular departures fill up quickly. For groups, tour operators, and charter inquiries, separate contingents and conditions are available; this way, corporate events, family celebrations, or weddings on the water can be reliably planned. On board, the crew provides you with hot and cold drinks as well as light meals – a comfortable service that makes the round trip a relaxed enjoyment experience. A tip for experience collectors: during the season, themed trips such as the Erdinger twilight tour with sunset atmosphere, parades at the start of the season, or autumn culinary trips complement the program. Inform yourself in advance about dates and secure your places promptly. For pick-ups and drop-offs at intermediate stations such as Zippendorf or the island Kaninchenwerder, please check the timetable of the respective line and the notices for registration in the low season before departure. This way, you can combine round trips and landings without haste. And if the weather changes, keep an eye on the current notices from the shipping company; flexibility is the best travel insurance on the water.
Access and Parking: Quickly Reached at Castle Pier
The Castle Pier scores with its location in the historical heart of Schwerin. Those arriving by car have it easy: the parking lot at the city harbor with access via Schliemannstraße is located on Werderstraße, directly opposite the city center area around the castle pier. From there, it is only a few minutes' walk to the jetty. In addition, several parking garages in the city center are available; particularly practical is the parking garage at the Schlosspark-Center, which is about 500 meters from the castle. This keeps the walk to the pier short and pleasant – and the return after the round trip just as convenient. If you come by train, it is best to get off at the central stations in the city center and walk directly to the castle. For day visitors, combined city and lake tours are suitable: first through the old town and over the Old Garden to the castle pier, then continue to the 4-lake line or large island line. If you set out during major city events, you should pay attention to any closures and notices from the city and possibly switch to parking garages or park-and-ride areas. For cyclists, the approach via the waterfront paths is particularly attractive; bike parking spaces can be found near the castle and along Werderstraße. And for all those traveling with lighter luggage, it applies: most paths in the area around the pier are level, making it easy to move a small trolley or stroller. The combination of proximity, infrastructure, and signage ensures that you can board without detours and make the most of your time on the water.
History, Fleet, and Special Features: Schwerin from the Water Since 1852
Schwerin has a long tradition of passenger shipping. Already in the 19th century, a steamer service opened up the lake landscape; 1852 marked the test trip of the steamer Alban, which kicked off regulated connections over Lake Schwerin. In the second half of the 20th century, the operation was transferred to the publicly owned sector, before the shipping company was privatized after reunification in 1992. Today, the operation is known locally as Weiße Flotte Fahrgastschifffahrt Schwerin GmbH and operates several passenger ships for round and scheduled trips on the Schwerin waters. A defining ship of the fleet is the Schwerin, a day trip ship from 1979 that was modernized and extended in the 1990s. Over the decades, lines and ships have changed; what remains is the central role of the castle pier as a gateway to the lake world. The current program seamlessly connects to the historical idea: easy accessibility, regular departures, round trips with changing perspectives. Remarkable is the scenic drama of the standard route: from the castle, it goes over narrow waterways into Heidensee and then into the Ziegelseen, past the distinctive Speicher Hotel with its pier, before the castle comes back into view. With the new harbor facility on the island Kaninchenwerder, ceremoniously opened in June 2024, the offer gains additional appeal: the island is not only a nature and landscape protection area but also better accessible for day visitors since the modernization, allowing the White Fleet to comfortably approach the station. On board, announcements ensure that sights and natural features do not go unnoticed; large windows in the lower deck provide weather-independent sightlines. Culinary extras, themed trips on summer evenings, and winter tours with warm drinks round off the program. Thus, the WHITE FLEET Schwerin combines historical awareness, service, and scenic quality into a year-round experience on the water.

Professional, easy to purchase tickets at the dock. Note that the guided audio portions are in German only. Much of the tour actually takes place in several of the inlets so not much to see, but still a comfortable and pleasant ride, especially if the weather is nice. Unless it's summer, consider bringing warm clothes if you want to sit upstairs on the open-air deck.

21.50€ for a 1.5-hour boat trip would be acceptable if the staff were friendly, if the toilets were clean, if the beverage prices on board were not similar to those on a scheduled flight (glass of water €2.90), if the little information - played from a tape - was presented with a little more enthusiasm. For us, it was the last trip with the White Fleet. Schwerin Zoo definitely has more to offer the family for a €16 day ticket (July 2024).

I did the 3 lakes tour and found it unimpressive and incredibly boring. The boat simply goes through some smaller lakes where the views are just of the houses along the shore, really nothing interesting to see. Over the PA system a couple of one minute long explanations are narrated in German with basic facts. The tour costs 21 euros, very expensive in my opinion for what it has to offer, so definitely not worth it. Perhaps older people appreciate it better than me...

Poor service, both on the boat and on land. Unfriendly, and outright rude wait staff on the boat. I am accustomed to slow and less than enthusiastic service in Europe (that’s part of the deal), but this experience was different in that they were actively rude and nasty. I wouldn’t recommend.

No English, only German. The guide only had a few words to say during the boat trip. They could have made it better for the tourists and translate those few words to English too.
