When Images Become Bodies: Aperture, monitor, field, mouth, language, in Schwerin

The Art Association for Mecklenburg and Vorpommern in Schwerin presents the group exhibition Aperture, monitor, field, mouth, language, from October 31, 2026, to January 10, 2027. Keta Gavasheli, Danae Io, Chantal Kaufmann, and Jonida Laçi combine video installations, sculptures, photographs, and photograms into a media cross-sectional investigation of body, space, language, and object.

Perception as Artistic Material

At the center of the exhibition is the question of how images are created, read, and changed by technical devices. Cameras, monitors, projections, and optical instruments do not appear as neutral tools, but as extensions of the body and perception. The works draw attention to cinematic camera work, photographic imaging, and the conditions of seeing.

The exhibition refers to a quote from the author Quinn Latimer. Its conceptual starting point is the first documented photographic image View from the Window at Le Gras by Nicéphore Niépce from 1826. From this art-historical reference, a parcours emerges, in which historical image production and contemporary media technologies interact.

Video Installation, Sculpture, and Photogram in Dialogue

The exhibition atmosphere arises from the interplay of different media. Video installations bring movement, time, and projection into the space. Sculptures present physical presence and materiality, while photographs and photograms question the boundary between imprint, memory, and optical construction.

The images follow narrative structures but sometimes elude a clear resolution. Repetitions, loops, and shifts remind us of the workings of memory: meaning remains in motion and continuously reconfigures itself during the contemplation of the works. This is precisely where the aesthetic experience of this exhibition lies.

Artistic Positions Between Image and Language

Chantal Kaufmann lives and works in Zurich and Vienna. Her artistic practice is dedicated to the connections between image and language as well as the joint meaning-making between authors and recipients. In addition to her exhibition activities, she taught at the University of Applied Arts from 2023 to 2026.

Jonida Laçi lives and works in Vienna. She studied object sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and received the Kunsthalle Vienna Prize in 2025. Her works have been shown in Vienna, Brussels, Tirana, Geneva, Basel, and Karlsruhe, among others. In Schwerin, her sculptural perspective meets the photographic and video-based techniques of the other artists.

Curating as an Invitation to Personal Image Reading

The curation does not lead to a single interpretation, but opens an experiential space for different forms of seeing. Visitors encounter images that traverse documentation, construction, and memory. Thus, the exhibition also becomes a place of cultural education: it sharpens awareness of media frameworks and the power inscribed in perceptual habits.

The art experience thrives on slow contemplation. Light, projection, material, and spatial effects enter into a silent dialogue. What initially seems familiar begins to shift: the gaze itself becomes a subject, the body a measure, and the image an open translation of the built environment.

Conclusion: Contemporary Art as an Intense Aesthetic Experience

Aperture, monitor, field, mouth, language, brings together four independent artistic positions into a precisely curated exhibition about image technologies, memory, and perception. Art enthusiasts can expect a sensual and simultaneously art-historically grounded art experience with video, photography, sculpture, and photograms. A visit to the Art Association for Mecklenburg and Vorpommern in Schwerin is especially worthwhile for those who want to not only observe contemporary art but also experience its spatial, physical, and media effects.
