Dresden Women Painters of the Romantic Era: Forgotten Voices of Art History

On Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Schleswig-Holstein House Cultural Forum in Schwerin invites you to an art historical lecture on Dresden Women Painters of the Romantic Era – Women's Fates between Brush and Everyday Life. Dr. Romy Donath, director of the Kügelgenhaus – Museum of Dresden Romanticism and the Carl Maria von Weber Museum in Dresden, will present selected female artists and their life paths.

Between Studio, Academy, and Everyday Life

For centuries, Dresden developed into a significant center of European art. Even during the Romantic period, numerous female artists worked there, receiving instruction at the art academy or being privately trained by renowned painters. The lecture focuses on those female painters whose biographies were overshadowed for a long time by the male-dominated art canon.

A Female Perspective on Romanticism

Among others, Dora Stock, Caroline Bardua, and Louise Seidler are at the center of attention. Their life stories tell of artistic ambition, societal expectations, and the structural limitations that women faced in the art industry of the 18th and 19th centuries. The examination of their works combines painting, biography, and social history into a nuanced art historical classification.

Art History as Cultural Education

The lecture opens up an aesthetic experience beyond familiar master narratives. It makes visible how closely intertwined artistic education, family obligations, and social role models were. The exhibition atmosphere of the Cultural Forum provides an appropriate setting for a concentrated exploration of Dresden Romanticism and its female protagonists.

An Art Experience with Sustainable Perspective Shift

The audience can expect a vivid introduction to previously lesser-known female artist biographies and the cultural conditions of their work. Those who wish to understand Romanticism not just as an era of atmospheric landscapes but as a complex history of art and society will find new perspectives here. The lecture enriches the visit to the accompanying exhibition and invites a more conscious examination of artworks, life concepts, and historical power relations.
