What We Consider Real: Photography Between Perception and Artificial Reality
In the Brunnenhof of Schwerin Höfe, Matthias Radtke invites you to a focused examination of the question of what people consider real. The pop-up exhibition presents a total of 18 photographs from the years 2019 to 2025 from October 8 to 24, 2026. On October 15, a special evening with Cellectric and Ulrich Maiß will complement the exhibition with soundscapes between cello and electronics.
18 Photographs, Seven Perspectives on Reality
The exhibition is divided into seven work groups: Authenticity, Trace and Material, Stage and Staging, Order and Structure, Disturbance, Transition and Atmosphere, as well as Architecture and Time. Radtke focuses on moments when familiar motifs lose their clarity. Light, surface, space, and architectural structure appear as independent creative forces.
The Triptych Authenticity
At the center is the triptych Authenticity. Two photographs show real people, with an AI-generated portrait between them that combines elements of both faces. The middle image depicts a person no one has ever seen. Thus, the installation leads directly into a contemporary discussion of identity, image truth, and artificially created reality.
The Architectural View on Space and Material
Matthias Radtke is a graduate engineer in architecture and has worked for more than 25 years in public building construction, including at Schwerin Castle and Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). This experience shapes his photographic language. Proportion, materiality, shadow, and light merge into compositions that go beyond mere documentary representation. Since 2025, Radtke has been working as a freelance artist under mats-ig.art and publishes fine art photographs in limited editions.
Exhibition Atmosphere in Brunnenhof
The urban space of Schwerin Höfe creates a special exhibition atmosphere between everyday life and art. The photographs invite a slowed-down seeing: colors recede, shapes gain weight, surfaces tell of use and time. The aesthetic experience arises from the interplay between the precise images and the open architecture of Brunnenhof.
Special Evening with Cello and Electronics
On October 15 at 7:00 PM, Cellectric and Ulrich Maiß will accompany the exhibition with improvisations for cello and electronics. The soundscapes broaden the examination of works with a musical layer and create an atmospheric dialogue between photography, space, and improvised music. Admission to the special evening is free; a voluntary hat donation is possible.
Conclusion: An Art Experience about Trust in Images
What We Consider Real connects contemporary photography, architectural thinking, and the socially relevant question of the boundary between human and artificial images. Visitors can expect an intense art experience with precise compositions, enigmatic image moments, and space for individual interpretations. Those who want to experience the aesthetic experience of photography directly and sharpen their own perception should visit this free exhibition in Schwerin live.
