Händel fast forward: When Baroque meets Jazz

On Thursday, October 29, 2026, the werk3 / KlangWert in Schwerin transforms into a sound space between baroque expressiveness and modern jazz freedom. Efrat Alony and Philipp Nykrin present their cross-genre concert project Händel fast forward – My secret love affair.

A secret declaration of love to Georg Friedrich Händel

My secret love affair is what Israeli singer Efrat Alony calls her special relationship with the works of Georg Friedrich Händel. Together with pianist Philipp Nykrin, she approaches the music of the Baroque composer from the spirit of jazz. Historical melodies, expressive improvisation, and contemporary sound colors meet in an independent musical language.

Between aria, improvisation, and free expression

The concert connects Händel's emotional directness with Alony's distinctive dark voice and Nykrin's nuanced piano playing. Orchestration emerges here from the direct dialogue between the two musicians: voice, piano, rhythm, and dynamics intertwine, while familiar musical structures take on new forms.

The stage performance thrives on sonic closeness and concentrated synchronization. Jazz typical freedom meets the clear melodic architecture of the Baroque. This creates a concert experience that appeals to classical audiences as much as jazz fans and curious listeners.

Excellent boundary crosser of jazz

For the album Händel fast forward, Efrat Alony received the OPUS Klassik in 2024 in the category Classical Without Borders. The award underscores the special significance of this project: Händel's music does not appear as a museum repertoire but as a living material for expression, movement, and musical truth.
