A visual essay about code, community, and feminist history of knowledge
As part of the Culture Night Schwerin 2026, the Art Association for Mecklenburg and Vorpommern presents Katrin Mayer's video work convulsa or The Need for Each Other‘s Relay. The art experience combines moving images, text montages, and art-theoretical reflections into a poetic inquiry into writing, programming, networking, and communal knowledge.
When zero becomes an open thought space
At the center of Katrin Mayer's visual research is the figure of zero. It appears as a symbol of code, as a circle, hole, shell, or point, opening a thought space beyond binary order systems. The video work connects these forms with the concept of the zero-logical subject, which understands identity, self, and writing as movable practices.
Image essay between painting, media art, and theory
Mayer works with borrowed images, small animations, GIFs, and a polyphonic text montage. Historical image sources, philosophical models, and digital signs enter into an associative relationship. This creates no linear narrative but a topological composition where connections, transitions, and translation processes become visible.
The aesthetic experience arises from the interplay of moving images, language, and thought loops. The atmosphere of the exhibition invites focused contemplation of the work: The gaze follows less an action than a network of motives, voices, and visual relations.
Feminist media history as cultural education
The starting point of the project is Katrin Mayer's research and publication platform c0da. It remembers women whose contributions to the history of programming and digital culture have long been marginalized. Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper appear as important reference points for a history of technical work that is not reduced to male genius.
The work combines art history, media criticism, and feminist theory. It questions how knowledge is created, who authorship is attributed to, and what forms of communal writing can replace the singular concept of genius. Polyphonic voices, glitches, translation, and network capability become artistic and political processes.
Artist talk at 7 PM
Following the screening, there will be an artist talk Software / Hardware – soft goods / hard goods with Katrin Mayer and curator Lisa Dohmstreich at 7 PM. A web-to-print publication will accompany the video essay.
Conclusion: An art experience between image, language, and digital history
convulsa or The Need for Each Other‘s Relay opens a sensual and intellectual encounter with contemporary media art. Visitors can expect a multifaceted visual essay on feminist knowledge production, coding, and the social power of writing. Those wanting to experience art as aesthetic experience, research, and critical practice should attend this screening live during Culture Night Schwerin.
